Redundancy

Redundancy

This is one of those 'scary' words in the world of HR and OD isn't it?

Well, I don't mean it in the context of how we would normally think of it. I have borrowed the phrase from Commercial Pilot safety. In the fear of flying courses that I run, the pilot speakers that I work with use this word. In that context, it means capacity or back up systems. In other words, the commercial aircraft is so safe because it has redundancy built into it - more safety and back ups than it will ever need.

How does this relate to the world of training?

In the world of training (I bang on about this all the time) we need to be prepared. We need to make sure that everything that can be organised, sent off, printed, sought...etc. is totally done and dusted before the training runs. This applies to facilitated events and even just team meetings. If your prep is done well beforehand, it leaves you with your capacity to deal with the unexpected...

  • Room is double booked
  • Laptop dies
  • Late delegates
  • 'Difficult delegates'
  • Delegates!
It seems obvious to say this but if all the practical things are taken care of, it leaves your more brain space to deal with the unexpected but also, to actually listen properly.  Personally, it allows me space for last minute creativity. (All of my best ideas pop into my head about three minutes before the delegates arrive....)
